Epitaxial growth: key points
Epitaxial growth is a technique for growing a single-crystal thin film on a single-crystal substrate with the same crystal orientation as the substrate. Because it can create layers with precisely controlled impurity concentrations, it is used for power devices, bipolar devices and compound semiconductor devices.
Growing the same material as the substrate is homoepitaxy, and growing a different material is heteroepitaxy. In heteroepitaxy, defects caused by differences in lattice constant (lattice mismatch) must be considered.
