What is Configuration management?
The process of identifying the components that make up an IT service (configuration items, CIs) and recording their attributes (version, location, owner and so on) and their relationships with other CIs accurately, keeping them up to date. The database that holds these records is called the CMDB (configuration management database). CIs include servers and network equipment, software, documents and the services themselves. Knowing the relationships between CIs makes it easier to determine the scope of a failure and the impact of a change.
