How to read datasheets

When checking whether the receiver's hold time is met, which value of the transmitter's clock-to-output delay should be used?

  1. AMinimum (min)
  2. BMaximum (max)
  3. CTypical (typ)
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. Minimum (min)

Hold time is the time data must continue to be held after the clock edge. When the transmitter outputs the next data on the same clock edge, the previous data at the receiver is replaced earliest when the delay is shortest. Therefore, check that the sum of the min clock-to-output delay and the minimum trace delay is at least the hold time. If the datasheet gives no min value, estimate on the safe side, for example by assuming 0 ns. The max value is used for setup checks.
