What is Ideality factor?

The factor n in the diode equation I ∝ exp(qV/nkT). It is close to 1 when diffusion current dominates and close to 2 when recombination in the depletion layer dominates, so it indicates junction quality.

Questions that mention Ideality factor (2)

  1. For an ideal diode (ideality factor n = 1) at room temperature, roughly how much must the forward voltage increase to raise the forward current tenfold?
  2. In the diode current expression I ∝ exp(qV / nkT), when is the ideality factor n close to 2?
