How to read datasheets
Which correctly describes what "RoHS compliant" means for electronic components?
- AA third-party certification body individually certifies each product as able to withstand the high reflow temperatures of lead-free solder
- BThe amount of greenhouse gases emitted in the manufacturing process is kept below limits set by the EU
- CThe content of specific hazardous substances defined by EU rules, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium, is below the limits
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C. The content of specific hazardous substances defined by EU rules, such as lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium, is below the limits
RoHS is an EU rule restricting the use of specific hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. It covers a total of 10 substances—lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, two brominated flame retardants (PBB and PBDE) and four phthalates—with limits of 0.1% by weight (0.01% for cadmium) per homogeneous material. Because RoHS-compliant parts presume mounting with lead-free solder, their tolerance of reflow conditions with a peak temperature of around 260 °C is often stated as well, but this is not a requirement of RoHS itself.
