How to read datasheets

Which correctly describes the content of a document called "errata" provided for microcontrollers and similar devices?

  1. AA collection of only typos and omissions in the datasheet, unrelated to the product's operation
  2. BKnown defects where the device does not operate as specified in the datasheet, along with the conditions under which they occur and workarounds
  3. CNew features to be added to the product in the future and the planned availability date for each
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Known defects where the device does not operate as specified in the datasheet, along with the conditions under which they occur and workarounds

In complex ICs, behavior that differs from the specification is sometimes discovered after shipment. Errata are documents that compile such known defects together with the affected chip revisions, the conditions under which they occur and workarounds (software fixes, usage restrictions, etc.). For example: "Under certain conditions a peripheral flag may not be set, so check the status by another method." Corrections of documentation errors may also be included, but the main purpose is to report defects in actual operation, and errata must always be checked early in design.
