What is Flow control?
The mechanism by which a sender adjusts how much or how fast it sends so that the receiver is not overrun. In TCP the receiver advertises its free buffer space (the receive window), and the sender does not send beyond it. RTS/CTS on a UART, Ethernet PAUSE frames and credit-based flow control in PCI Express are also forms of flow control. It is distinct from congestion control, which adapts to how busy the network as a whole is.
