What is SBOM (software bill of materials)?
A machine-readable list of the components that make up a piece of software, such as libraries, with their names, versions, suppliers and dependency relationships. Formats include SPDX and CycloneDX. When a vulnerability is announced in a component, it lets the affected products and versions be identified quickly, and it is also used for license management. Following a US executive order of May 2021, it has increasingly been required in government procurement and elsewhere.

FAQ
Is it related to the bill of materials (BOM) for semiconductors and electronic components?
The idea is the same: the bill of materials used in manufacturing applied to software. However, the components of an SBOM are software such as libraries, and its main purposes are vulnerability and license management. A list of hardware components is sometimes called an HBOM.
Which format should an SBOM use?
The widely used formats are SPDX (developed mainly under the Linux Foundation and also published as the international standard ISO/IEC 5962) and CycloneDX (developed mainly by OWASP), and many tools handle both. The choice follows the requirements of customers or regulations, and conversion between the formats is also possible.
